Why You Need The IELTS Core Course

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses the English language proficiency of people who want to study or work in English-speaking environments. There are two tests. The Academic Test is for those people who wish to study abroad, while the General Test is for people who wish to work in or immigrate to an English speaking country. At IELTS TAIPEI we specialize in preparing students for the more rigorous Academic Test format.

Both tests consist of four separate parts, assessing the four language skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS is a task-based test which is likely different than the tests you might have taken in high school or university. Task based language assessment focuses on what learners are able to do with the English language as opposed to what they know about language. By focusing on tasks, the IELTS Exam is able to accurately assess the language performance of a student.

For example, Tasks in the Reading and Listening parts can involve note-taking, labelling and completion of tables or flow charts. The Writing Test will often include a task presenting a table or line graph for you to analyze. The question is included to test your ability to describe the information in the table in a succinct manner, using a specific set of vocabulary. If you understand what the exam is looking for and have mastered the proper vocabulary you will score high.

The secret to scoring well on the IELTS Exam is to understand the task and the type of answers that the examiner is looking for. That is where the IELTS Core Course will help you. By the end of the course, you will understand the logic of the IELTS, the particular skill that the exam is testing for and how to demonstrate your language proficiency.

What Is Included?

You’ll learn techniques to develop all four key English skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking (including pronunciation) to raise your English level before the exam. You will also prepare and practice common questions and tasks in the IELTS exam.Specifically, we will work together to make sure you:

  • Are familiar with the format and types of tasks in the different parts of the IELTS test
  • Are familiar with the assessment criteria
  • Learn to identify the context and the type of information the exam is testing for
  • Know how best to approach each parts
  • Develop an awareness of the time allowed for each section and include timed practice in class
  • Know how best to approach each type of listening and reading task
  • Develop reading skills such as skimming and scanning — you will need to use these skills to answer all the questions in the time allotted.
  • Structure your writing logically and clearly
  • Decide on a position and use examples and evidence to support points you make in the writing and speaking sections
  • Learn to use fillers and hesitation devices if you need ‘thinking time’ before answering

Is This The Right Course For You?

You have a solid understanding of English Grammar, but need to focus on your Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening skills. You need a band score of 6.5 or higher and you are prepared to work hard to achieve the high score that you need.
